Description:
I love a good bagel for my breakfast! Tried my first batch this weekend and the recipe below produces some really amazing, relatively quick and lovely home baked bagels.
Ingredients
- 550g all purpose flour
- 1 tsp yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1, 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 tsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp oil
- water for boiling bagels - enough to allow 3-4 bagels to float up + 1 tbsp brown sugar/honey (optional)
- ½ tsp salt
- cornflour - to dust baking sheets
- Optional topping - 2 tbsp black & white sesame seeds
Instructions
Mix flour and salt.
Activate yeast by adding water & sugar as per instructions.
Mix water, oil & brown sugar & combine with above dry ingredients & yeast & knead a smooth dough.Cover & rest dough for 15 mins. Divide & roll into 8 balls using the palm of your hand & then let the balls rest again for 15 mins.
Poke hole in the center of each ball with your finger & gently stretch the hole out to about 2” wide. Place on a prepared baking sheet brushed with oil & dusted with some cornflour. There will be shrinking so stretch all the bagels a few times to widen the centers. Cover the bagels with some cling film sprayed with oil & refrigerate o/n.
Preheat the oven to 220C.
Bring water to a boil in a deep pan and boil bagels in batches of 3 to 4 for 4-5 mins. while flipping once in between.
Drain bagels & place onto a baking sheet dusted with some cornflour.Top up with your favourite seasoning & bake for 15-20 mins. until golden.
